DURING A REFLEXOLOGY SESSION:

You will lie on a massage or chiropractic table, zero gravity chair, sit in massage chair, sit in your wheelchair or lie in your hospital bed.  You will be fully clothed throughout your session. Only gentle pressure is used on the reflexes of the feet, hands, face or ears as sessions are powerful enough without causing unnecessary pain/stress to the body. Generally a session lasts between 30-60 minutes. You can rest during the session and ask any questions afterwards so that you may fully receive the benefits of your session, but please communicate your needs and comfort level at any time during the session.  If you fall asleep during the session, you will still receive the benefits of the therapy.

WHO CAN NOT BE HELPED WITH REFLEXOLOGY?

There are instances wherein the client may be referred to seek additional care from another health care provider, such as a chiropractor, nutritionist, yoga instructor, medical doctor, etc.  In a very few instances, there may be no noticeable changes for clients.  In those instances clients may be referred to other therapies which may be a better fit or simply more appropriate.

IS REFLEXOLOGY GOING TO MAKE ME TICKLISH?

While many people are ticklish, especially in their feet, most people do not experience that sensation during a reflexology session.  However, if your feet are particularly ticklish, you can instead receive reflexology on your hands, face, ears or combination thereof.

WHEN SHOULD YOU NOT HAVE A REFLEXOLOGY SESSION?

Some of the contraindications for treatment are if a client has been drinking that day or plans to, infection, fever, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, active cellulitis, undiagnosed swelling, unstable heart condition, kidney failure, edema due to end of life organ failure.  Depending on what type of reflexology you are seeking, more contraindications may exist for your particular situation.  There are also instances, that may require a physician's note to be able to provide therapy.  While it can be frustrating to encounter these types of limitations, they are in place to keep you safe.

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A REFLEXOLOGY SESSION?

Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation. Various other reactions may occur following a reflexology session and are positive signs; part of a healing process or indicative of the body's attempts to return to a state of balance and harmony. Symptoms usually last for 24-48 hours.

Reactions to reflexology session may include, but definitely not limited to:

  • Relaxation

  • Increased energy

  • Enhanced sleep

  • Relief from pain

  • More mobile joints

  • Tiredness

  • Nauseous

  • Tensing muscles

  • Skin rashes, pimples, or spots

  • Kidney stones passed with ease

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Increased mucus (nasal discharge, vaginal discharge)

  • Emotional or psychological release (crying)

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

That all depends on your reason for seeking reflexology and your body's ability to heal; some are happy with an occasional session, others prefer having daily sessions for a period of time to recover from a trauma to their body, some seek weekly sessions to help manage edema/lymphedema/lipedema for a period of time with maintenance sessions following the initial weekly sessions, cancer patients may only have a session the day before their next cycle of chemotherapy, and of course there are those who fall somewhere in between; so it truly is personal, but I'll be happy to guide you in your options based on your unique situation.  Reflexology tends to be cumulative, and have a down and up style graph if you were to track the before and after effects of several sessions, with a consistent track of improvement.

CAN YOU TRACK PROGRESS?

There are several standard outcome measurements that can be used, to track progress over a course of sessions.  In instances of edema/lymphedema/lipedema I can also take actual measurements before and after the session.  If you are interested in tracking your progress, please do not hesitate to ask.  I may also be the one interested in using one or more of the standard outcome measurements during your session.

If you are late to your appointment then your session will need to be shorter, because appointments are set in blocks of time.
